Faculty, staff and students are welcome to participate in the Whittemore Library’s 3rd annual “book-themed” cake decorating contest. All you need to do is bake a cake and decorate it to represent a scene or character from a favorite book, be it a beloved children’s book or your favorite adult book. Check out photos from past year’s event here

(Only one cake per person and no commercially decorated cakes allowed!)

The rules for the event are simple. Register with Colleen Previte at cprevite@framingham.edu or x4648, if you wish to participate in the contest.  Bring in your “Book-themed” cake to the Henry Whittemore Library on the morning of Friday, April 19th.  Please have your cake properly covered with clear plastic wrap. This will be taken off when the judging commences.  Please do not put your name on your cake; you will be assigned a number for your cake submission.

We are allowing anyone coming through the library to judge the cakes, and they would put a token in the box of the cake they find to be the best. There will be bragging rights, a photo in our library blog, and ribbons for 1st-3rd place as well as notices for honorable mentions.

Judging will run from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Winners will be announced at 1 p.m. or via phone/e-mail.  At 1 p.m. we will cut into these delicious creations and offer them to patrons, unless told otherwise.

-A performance by Ben Cosgrove in Library Café, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th.
-Get a free wrapped book in our Books “under-wrap” give-away
(Give-away is all week long or until we run out).
-Enter our Whittemore library staff matching baby photo contest.  Win a prize!  (entries accepted until drawing on Fri. April 19th).
-Draw Your Favorite Book (Month of April)
-Faculty/Staff Publications and Art & Craft Exhibit (Runs month of April).
-Environmental Poetry Workshop/Poetry Slam led by Professor Sam Witt in the Library Cafe at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17th.
-Reading by author Maryanne O’Hara in the Library Café on Thursday, April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.
-Literary Cake Decorating Contest – Any patron can make a cake in the theme of a book in the Library Café on Friday, April 19, come vote for your favorite 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, come enjoy a sample of these yummy creations 1-2pm.

Empowerment…Now that you know the words, come and discover the faces of the Commonwealth’s new members at a photo exhibition by Mario Quiroz entitled “Immigrants in New England: An Old American Tradition” about Immigrants’ Contribution to Massachusetts Passion.

Together, they are helping to maintain the Massachusetts tradition of ingenuity and progress for the benefit of all of us.

The Department of Physics and Earth Sciences and the Henry Whittemore Library presented the first installment of Science Café: The World is Ending, But Not in 2012! A talk by Professor Kristin Chon, Physics and Earth Sciences on September 21, Friday, 12:30 pm, at the Library Cafe.

What have people believed about the end of the world, from ancient times to the present?  What about the recent, widespread fear that the world will end in December, 2012?  Professor Chon spoke to this issue and initiated a discussion on what we know and how we know it.

Spencer is a Senior English major at Framingham State with a concentration in journalism. He has worked at The Gatepost, FSU’s weekly independent student newspaper, since his Freshman year, and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief. Spencer worked as an editorial intern at both the MetroWest Daily News in Framingham and the Metro Halifax newspaper in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
